Reptiles, Assemblies, Cooking Projects, Presentations and Learning Galore!

We have started our unit on reptiles.  Reptiles are vertebrates that are cold blooded. They usually live in warmer climates such as desserts and rain forests.  One type of reptile is the turtle which we studied all of its body parts.

Dr. Seuss Day was wonderful!  The children had a great time dressing up as their favorite characters, working on the amazing crafts in the classroom, eating green eggs and ham, and listening to some of the best children’s books.  Thank you to our volunteers, we couldn’t have done it without you!

The Last Bit of January

Hello P3 Families!!!

We had a busy end to our month of January as we finished off our solar system studies by learning about the later planets.

Jupiter: Is the largest planet.  It is the first of four ringed planets known as the Gas Giants.  It has many moons and a thin, faint ring system.

Saturn: Is known for its beautiful ring system made of billions of pieces of ice and rock.  It takes nearly 30 years to orbit the Sun and is very cold.

Uranus: Has 15 moons, and a distinct blue coloring caused by methane in its atmosphere.

Neptune: Is the last of the Gas Giants.  The surface of Neptune has huge storms and clouds always moving and changing. It has many moons as well.

Pluto: A very small planet made of mostly rock and ice.  Sometimes known as a Dwarf Planet.

Planet Nine: The predicted planet would be a super-Earth with an estimated mass of about 10 times that of Earth.  A thick atmosphere of hydrogen and helium, and a highly elliptical orbit so far away that it could take 15,000 years to orbit the Sun.

Mason and Bronx’s families came to our classroom to make Solar System Snow Globes. This was an awesome project for our students to participate in!  We hope that they are enjoying their globes at home!

Coco’s family came to make banana pancakes with the children…but the only ingredients were bananas and eggs!!!  They were nutritious and delicious, served with whipped cream and blueberries. This was a first-time experience for some of our students with cracking an egg. They were very excited to see what was inside!

On Thursday, February 11th we will be having our Valentine’s Day Celebration in P3. Please supply your child with Valentines to hand out to their friends during our exchange.  Valentines can be homemade or store bought.  Please make sure there is a Valentine for each of our 31 students.  Have your child only sign their name and not personally address each Valentine. Please do not send sweets or candy to share.  However, children may bring pencils, erasers, stickers, etc. if they wish to share something, but is certainly not necessary! We will be decorating bags in class to store their Valentines and crafts, so no need to provide any extra boxes or bags. Let us know if you have any questions! Thank you!!!

Space Studies, Chinese Acrobats, The Arctic, The Cat in the Hat… What an exciting start to January!

Happy New Year P3 Families!!!

We have started 2016 off with a bang!  The Kindergarteners received new goal sheets, more of our students are beginning to work with reading boxes, and everyone was excited to see their friends after the long break!

We have started our solar system studies for the month and have learned about the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Earth, Moon, and Mars so far.  Use these topics during meal times to make the connection between school and home!  Some of the information that we have discussed about space are temperatures, elements in the atmosphere, what the planets have been named after, and how many days are in a year.

The Sun:

Not a planet but a star, largest object in our solar system, made of mostly hydrogen and helium, provides warmth and light to Earth, core temperature of 27,000,000 degrees F.

Mercury:

Named after the Roman god of messengers, closest planet to the sun, atmosphere consists of a barely noticeable trace of carbon dioxide, covered with craters.

Venus:

Named after the Roman goddess of love, about the same size as Earth, thick atmosphere of carbon dioxide, surface temperature of 475 degrees F, covered with mountains and volcanoes.

Earth:

Third planet from the sun, only planet known to support life, the largest and densest rocky planet, only planet with liquid water on its surface, the Earth is fragile, a year = 365 days, the Earth orbits around the sun.

The Moon:

We can only see one side of the moon at a time from Earth, has no atmosphere, the moon has different phases, the gravity of the moon effects the tides, first man to walk on the moon was Neil Armstrong.

Mars:

Named after the Roman god of war and agriculture, atmosphere is made of nitrogen, oxygen and argon, called ‘the red planet’ due to the rusty red appearance caused by iron in its soil, year = 687 days.

We had an exciting assembly this week!  Acrobats all the way from China came to visit our school and put on a wonderful performance!  The children were amazed at the tricks and routines that these wonderful athletes could do.  Some of our friends even had an opportunity to try juggling with one of the acrobats.

Gianna’s mother came into our classroom and read a book, “Way Up in the Arctic,” and created a job with snow and arctic animals.  The children enjoyed using the new work and hearing the sweet story, in addition to learning about the climate and animals that live in this interesting and freezing environment.

We had our first all class field trip this week to The Smith Center to see, “The Cat in the Hat.”  The children loved riding on the bus together and having the opportunity to watch this quirky and lovable play.  We heard lots of laughing during the performance and the students talked about it for the rest of the day!  Thank you to all of our wonderful chaperones that helped with this trip!

Happy Holidays!

Happy Holidays P3 Families!

We have been hard at work this month in P3.  The children have been working on many holiday projects and have been rehearsing their sing-a-long songs.

This month we have been studying Europe.  We have learned about some of the different animals inhabiting the amazing countries on the continent. Alex’s mom came into our classroom and gave a wonderful presentation about Holland. She grew up there, and was able to share interesting stories and pictures with the students about this beautiful country.

Miss Alisa continued her holiday tradition this year and made latkes with the students. They helped to peel the potatoes and mix the ingredients.  This year’s batch was extra delicious, and the pancakes were served with applesauce and sour cream!  The students enjoyed learning about Hanukkah and the festival of lights!

Coco’s family did an extra fun cooking project with the friends!  They made zucchini noodles with roasted tomato sauce!  They got to put on gloves, smash the tomatoes, and learn about fresh herbs and vegetables while spiraling the zucchini!  They loved this healthy dish! A great recipe to try together at home!

Gianna and Ava’s mothers came to our classroom to make beaded candy canes with the children for them to decorate their homes.  The students came up with beautiful patterns and were able to work on their fine motor skills!  They enjoyed sharing where they hung their candy canes the next day at school.

Our sing-a-long was a huge success!  The children loved inviting their families into our classroom and sharing the songs that we have worked so hard on.  This was a wonderful opportunity to highlight our grace and courtesy lessons while the children lead their families to the refreshment stand.  The cookies were yummy and the holiday gifts were as cute as ever!  Thank you for joining us for this special event!

Gobble Gobble

Hello P3 Families!

We have had a busy November!  The children have enjoyed learning about North America with focus on the United States. We have looked at the abbreviations of the states as well as studying the Native American culture, including symbols that have been used as early language and drawings.  We have also studied some of the animals that live in North America.

The children have also been studying the parts of a reptile including taking a close look at the parts of a turtle.

Everyone is excited about Thanksgiving and we have discussed traditions as well as what we are thankful for.  The children have commented that they are thankful for their family, food, school, cousins, hugs and their toys.  It’s very sweet to hear them discuss this special holiday.

The children enjoyed our special assembly on Australian Animals!  Some of our friends and teachers were very brave and held some of the creatures!
