We hope everyone had a wonderful Spring Break!  It was great hearing all about some of our students’ family trips.

This month has been very busy.  The children are finishing up their Rain Forest studies and have done many research papers, circle maps ,and picture stories about the Rain Forest.  We have read books, watched movie clips about the different animals that live in the Rain Forest (on Ms. Maryam’s iPad), and created our very own pictures of the different layers of the Rain Forest.

We are also finishing up our South America studies.  The children have learned some of the different countries that make up South America, and a little about each of their culture.

The Middle School students held a service day where our children had the opportunity to make different items for children that are less fortunate then we are.  Items such as lunch bags, bracelets, birthday cards, and book markers were a few of the activities our students helped to decorate.  This was a great example for the children to give back to their community and to help others that are in need.

On April 22nd we celebrated Earth Day to remind the children to reuse, reduce, and recycle.   The children made new rainbow colored crayons using old ones they found from home, and also made a cardboard light bulb (using an old cereal box) to help remind them to turn off the lights after leaving a room.

Spring has Sprung in P3

Hello parents – welcome to our blog and thank you for visiting!

We’ve been very busy finishing up our studies on Asia.  We had Mr. & Mrs. Chemplavil (Hannah’s mom & dad) and Mrs. Manjooran (Chris’s mom) visit our class and discuss the culture, food, music, and landmarks of Asia.  They brought in beautiful clothing worn from a traditional dancer and showed a video of professional dancers.  Hannah and her sister performed a non-traditional dance to Bollywood song medleys, and taught the children a few dance moves.  The food they shared with the class was Mango Lassi; which was a drink that Mrs. Manjooran blended in front of the children.  Bhonda – potatoes coated with chickpea flour, was another food shared with the class. All the girls got to wear a Bindi on the forehead to represent an Asian girl.  This was a wonderful opportunity for the class to gather more information about Asia.  Thank you to our visitors for offering your time and knowledge and sharing with our children.

We had another great opportunity for a visitor – Mrs. Blinn (Dylan’s mom) came to our class and discussed the traditions and culture of China. Mrs. Blinn shared pictures (The Great Wall of China, traditional clothing and houses), videos (from Mrs. Blinn’s trip to China), and food.  She shared Cha Siu Bao “BBQ pork buns” with the children, which is Dylan’s favorite Chinese food.  Thank you to Mrs. Blinn for sharing  your time and knowledge with us.

At our Kindergarten Assembly on Friday, March 21st Hannah performed her Non-Traditional Asian Dance with several friends on stage for the entire school.  She was amazing and put on a great performance!

We have started our new studies of South America and the Rain Forest this past week.  We learned about a few of the countries that make up South America (Brazil, Chile, Argentina), and discussed the different layers of the Rain Forest (Emergent, Canopy, Understory, Floor).  We watched a video that showed some of the different animals that live in each layer, and saw how they survive in the Rain Forest.  Some of the children have been doing research papers on Asia and the Rain Forest, and making very colorful Circle Maps as well.

On Thursday, April 4th we had Cadet Firefighters from Henderson visit our classroom to discuss the importance of fire safty.  The children enjoyed seeing all the gear the firemen wear when entering a fire, and hearing about their daily duties as a fireman.

Our class will be celebrating Earth Day on Tuesday, April 22nd (the first day back from spring Break).  We would like to do a few projects with the children to reinforce Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle – taking from the Earth and giving back to the Earth.  We are asking each child to bring in a few old crayons from home (maybe 8-10), a piece of cardboard (for ex. one side of a cereal box), and bring the items in a zip-lock bag with your child’s name on it by Friday, April 11th (before Spring Break begins). Thank you for your help.
